Almost all of us have experienced the nasty sensation that is the ringing of ears. It usually does not amount to much, but it can be very bothersome and it may even take over how you run your life. This is tinnitus, and if you have it, you will likely have trouble focusing on something. This is the ringing sound that affects one or both of your ears. But how exactly is the ringing in your ears caused?

Well, the most common and most probable cause for the ringing in your ears is being exposed to extremely high levels of noise. You may have experienced this yourself after attending very loud rock concerts. With all the deafening noise from the main concert speakers and the crowd, your ears will surely hurt after the event.

You could also experience ringing of ears if you listen to your headphones at very high levels. This is because headphones are much closer to your ear, and they could produce excessive levels if driven loudly enough. The microscopic hair cells inside your inner ear will break and they will produce the ringing sound that you hear.

Sometimes, if your head suffers trauma, it may be severe enough to cause damage to your ear. Usually though, the tinnitus that you would get from exposure to loud sounds and head trauma is only temporary. It may be bothersome, but after a day or two, the ringing will go away and your hearing will be back to normal.

Sometimes, allergies or medications can be the cause for tinnitus. They may go away on their own, but usually, they go away when the affliction subsides. With the case of allergies, the ringing in the ears would usually go away when the allergies are cured. But if the allergies are caused by medications, changing the dosage or maybe even changing to a substitute drug may cure the tinnitus that you would experience.

There is another type of tinnitus called pulsatile tinnitus or objective tinnitus. While the other types of tinnitus have a steady sound, pulsatile tinnitus usually has a pulsing sound that goes with your heartbeat. People who suffer from this type of tinnitus usually have circulatory problems like hypertension.

The sound that can be heard as tinnitus is usually varies. Sometimes it is just a ringing sound while other people hear chirping or whooshing sounds.

The ringing of ears is usually very bothersome. It may not have a proven cure, but the best thing that you could do is prevent it from happening to you. Staying away from very loud noises and having a healthy diet are only some of the ways to prevent having a ringing in your ears.
